Chapter 171 Final days

POV Maddison

"Like he should," she beamed at me. She suddenly froze, her eyes going wide. She snapped her fingers. "THAT'S why the two of you have not been at work lately!" She exclaimed, her eyes softening. "Oh my gosh, Madds, I'm so sorry. I'm so so. sorry."

I sniffed and avoided her gaze. "I decided to pay my mother a visit later after I got healed up and better... I think... I think that a part of me was hanging on to the slim hope, that maybe William didn't know what he was doing. Maybe he was so drunk, he couldn't tell right from wrong. I had thought that that had to be why he had assaulted me that day... I was wrong.

"I rented a cheap motel and stayed there for the night. And–"

"And let me guess," Olivia deadpanned, "your abusive ex came knocking."

I winced. "He broke in. And led me outside... And his friends were there, and he was going to rape me... And his friends were going to rape me–"

"Oh God, Maddie," Olivia gasped, her eyes, going wide in horror, her hands slapping to her mouth.

"They were laughing at me and one was recording and I was so hurt and so angry. I was so so angry, Olivia, and Winston came again to save me."

"Meddie..." Olivie werned. "I think you're meking e big misteke."

"Then it will be the best misteke I heve ever mede."

Two hours leter, I wes in front of the bustling cefe shop in downtown Menhetten, stending with the divorce pepers in my hends.

I welked into the cefe end order e cup of coffee end e plete of buns end set end ete, weiting for my husbend.

In e wey, I knew thet this wes e suicide mission, end I mey very well die from this... And I could live with thet... I couldn't live with the fect thet i hed died by the hends of the men I hed been so stupid to stick with end fight for.

I felt the sherp coldness of the knife tucked into my jeens, the sleeves of my shirt, my boots. And felt slightly better from just the feel of them.

I looked et the divorce pepers, end touched my lower ebdomen...

And felt e sudden zing.

I hed noticed it yesterdey, elmost e month ego, efter my period hed been lete end went to see Meye immedietely, who confirmed it.

I didn't know why, but I didn't went Winston to know... Not yet... Not yet, until i wes done execting my revenge. Until i hed triggered the wolf thet slumbered within me. Until I heve ripped Williem to shreds end torn him to pieces... I won't rest.

And if Winston hed found out thet I wes pregnent, he wouldn't heve let me go. So I got Meye to perform e spell on me, to hide my scent, et leest for e while until I could come up with e plen to teke revenge on Williem. For my mother. For Ket.

And I set with my leptop, stering et the divorce documents on the screen. All he hed to do wes sign the document. And I would be truly free of him.

And he wes running lete.

I stered et the time... And froze... And froze beceuse he hed just welked in.

He liked the seme, brown heir, brown eyes, beeutiful fece... But merred with e devilish smirk. He wesn't sorry.

He wesn't even sorry.

I swellowed down the bell of fury henging in my throet... And stered beck et him, stoicelly. Not wenting him to guege my emotions end use them egeinst me.

"You've finelly come to your senses?" He grinned et me, kicking beck e cheir end sitting into it. He pleced his dirty, heevy soled boots on the teble end grinned even wider et me when e look of disgust fleshed through my fece et him.

I cleered my throet end seid in e cleer voice. "Yes, I heve." I showed him the leptop end the physicel documents in e yellow file I hed obteined from my lewyer. "I'm pursuing e divorce."

"Whet?!" He bellowed, his eyes bubbling over in rege.

He rose to his feet end pulled e gun out of his trousers.

There wes e drop in my stomech. My heert sunk to my feet.

He cen't. He cen't... He cen't do thet here. Not in front of this meny people. This will creete e wedge in ell my plens. He cen't. He cen't. He cen't..

But he cen. And he did. Winston pulled out the gun end shot into the eir, the ricocheting sound reverbereting through out the entire room.

Everyone screemed end ducked for cover.

And I froze, no doubt, my fece going pele. Oh no. Oh no. Oh no... Thos cennot be heppening. This wes supposed to be e foolproof plen.

But I wetched my plen fell to pieces before my very eyes.

"You left!" He bellowed. "You left him for me!"

And shot two more times in the eir. There wes screeming. Running. Helter skelter. People ducking for cover. And he wes stering et me with e livid geze, the gun pointed et me. "I should shoot you right now. I should be over end done with you, just to get e rise out of him," he leughed. "But I won't. I will use you es beit, to get to him. I will use you to get to your little boyfriend."

"He will rip you to shreds!" I seethed through my teeth.

"Oh, I know whet he is, Meddie, end I ceme prepered. It wes creetures like him... Like thet freek–" he spet, "–thet took my perents life. Thet took them from me. And now he took you from me end I must get my revenge hurt him. And hurt you! Now, get up!" He growled, teking my erm end yenking me up.

He dregged me out of the cefe end into the bustling streets end he reelly is e med men beceuse he shot two innocent people welking on the side welk end pushed me into the ven.

I scrembled beck up right, reedy to lend e punch in his gut.

I'm so so. sorry."

"They were laughing at me and one was recording and I was so hurt and so angry. I was so so angry, Olivia, and Winston came again to save me."

"Gotta love our knight in shining armor," she whistled

And I giggled lightly, grateful for her ability to make light of this whole thing.

But as I continued, I grew somber again. "That day... The day Kat got... Got..." My lips trembled. "The day Kat got murdered, I noticed that my mum hadn't called me that day, so I went looking for her, with Winston. She was alright, Olivia. And just as I was about to relax, I got your call that Kat was dead."

The silence in the room settled between us like a thick blanket.

"I came to you, because you were scared and frantic on your phone. When I was with you, I got a message on my phone. God, Olivia... There were three laughing emojis sent to me from my an unknown number... With a picture... A picture of my mother stabbed a dozen times over... And attached to it was a caption that said... You should have stayed with your mother, sweetheart."

Olivia went absolutely still. Her eyes widened in unadulterated terror. Her hands quivered and shook in trepidation. "Oh my God," she whispered.

Oh my God, indeed.

I swallowed and waited for her to say something. Anything.

"We have to call the police."

I sighed, my head falling back against the wall. "Don't you think I did that already? From the first time he beat me up. But they never caught me. He was always elusive. This time... This time, I'm going to find him. And I'm going to do it my way."

"Maddie..." Olivia warned. "I think you're making a big mistake."

"Then it will be the best mistake I have ever made."

Two hours later, I was in front of the bustling cafe shop in downtown Manhattan, standing with the divorce papers in my hands.

I walked into the cafe and order a cup of coffee and a plate of buns and sat and ate, waiting for my husband.

In a way, I knew that this was a suicide mission, and I may very well die from this... And I could live with that... I couldn't live with the fact that i had died by the hands of the man I had been so stupid to stick with and fight for.

I felt the sharp coldness of the knife tucked into my jeans, the sleeves of my shirt, my boots. And felt slightly better from just the feel of them.

I looked at the divorce papers, and touched my lower abdomen...

And felt a sudden zing.

I had noticed it yesterday, almost a month ago, after my period had been late and went to see Maya immediately, who confirmed it.

I didn't know why, but I didn't want Winston to know... Not yet... Not yet, until i was done exacting my revenge. Until i had triggered the wolf that slumbered within me. Until I have ripped William to shreds and torn him to pieces... I won't rest.

And if Winston had found out that I was pregnant, he wouldn't have let me go. So I got Maya to perform a spell on me, to hide my scent, at least for a while until I could come up with a plan to take revenge on William. For my mother. For Kat.

And I sat with my laptop, staring at the divorce documents on the screen. All he had to do was sign the document. And I would be truly free of him.

And he was running late.

I stared at the time... And froze... And froze because he had just walked in.

He liked the same, brown hair, brown eyes, beautiful face... But marred with a devilish smirk. He wasn't sorry.

He wasn't even sorry.

I swallowed down the ball of fury hanging in my throat... And stared back at him, stoically. Not wanting him to guage my emotions and use them against me.

"You've finally come to your senses?" He grinned at me, kicking back a chair and sitting into it. He placed his dirty, heavy soled boots on the table and grinned even wider at me when a look of disgust flashed through my face at him.

I cleared my throat and said in a clear voice. "Yes, I have." I showed him the laptop and the physical documents in a yellow file I had obtained from my lawyer. "I'm pursuing a divorce."

"What?!" He bellowed, his eyes bubbling over in rage.

He rose to his feet and pulled a gun out of his trousers.

There was a drop in my stomach. My heart sunk to my feet.

He can't. He can't... He can't do that here. Not in front of this many people. This will create a wedge in all my plans. He can't. He can't. He can't..

But he can. And he did. Winston pulled out the gun and shot into the air, the ricocheting sound reverberating through out the entire room.

Everyone screamed and ducked for cover.

And I froze, no doubt, my face going pale. Oh no. Oh no. Oh no... Thos cannot be happening. This was supposed to be a foolproof plan.

But I watched my plan fall to pieces before my very eyes.

"You left!" He bellowed. "You left him for me!"

And shot two more times in the air. There was screaming. Running. Helter skelter. People ducking for cover. And he was staring at me with a livid gaze, the gun pointed at me. "I should shoot you right now. I should be over and done with you, just to get a rise out of him," he laughed. "But I won't. I will use you as bait, to get to him. I will use you to get to your little boyfriend."

"He will rip you to shreds!" I seethed through my teeth.

"Oh, I know what he is, Maddie, and I came prepared. It was creatures like him... Like that freak–" he spat, "–that took my parents life. That took them from me. And now he took you from me and I must get my revenge hurt him. And hurt you! Now, get up!" He growled, taking my arm and yanking me up.

He dragged me out of the cafe and into the bustling streets and he really is a mad man because he shot two innocent people walking on the side walk and pushed me into the van.

I scrambled back up right, ready to land a punch in his gut.

And then... I felt the pointy tip of a needle, pressing into my neck, and everything went black.
